We spend a lot of money on our surfboards, but how often do we take the time to clean them and make sure they’re in the best shape possible?
Remove Wax From Surfboard Safely Before You Clean A Surfboard
Removing the wax from your surfboard, cleaning your surfboard and waxing your surfboard is something that should be done about every six (6) months for the surfboards that you ride regularly. If you have surfboards that you ride less frequently, you can stretch that out to a longer interval. People will often have their favourite surfboard or two which they ride regularly.
But also have a few surfboards that get used infrequently. This might be a longboard, a midlength surfboard, your super groveler or your step-up surfboard for those really good days. It important to leave your board out in the sun for several minutes to soften the wax. This can be done with other methods such as a hair dryer or heat gun, but those are not recommended strategies because of the risk of overheating a section of your board and causing it to delaminate.
Using A Wax Comb To Start To Clean a Surfboard
Once the wax is soft enough for you to move the lumps with your finger. Stay out in the sun and use your wax comb to remove the old, dirty wax by running long lines from the top to tail and just collect all the old wax into a ball as you go. Once you have removed the bulk of the wax, switch to an old bank card and use it to scrape off the areas you missed, these are often in the compression marks. After removing as much of the wax as possible, it’s ok to take your board into the shade to complete the rest of the process.
Cleaning Products to Safely Clean A Surfboard
We do not recommend using household cleaners to clean your surfboard, some of these are very harsh and can cause damage to the surface of your surfboard. Mineral turpentine is the best option. Use a large rag and liberal amounts of turps and begin to clean off the rest of the wax.
Don’t forget to include the nose, rails and bottom of the board when you clean a surfboard, as there are often errant pieces of wax, sunscreen, zinc cream or other dirty marks in those other areas. If you discovered any dings while you were removing the wax, take note of where they are and repair them after cleaning the surfboard but before you wax your surfboard again.
